A LOT MORE ROCK N ROLL

A LOT MORE ROCK N ROLL – Demo

The next addition to my Isolation Demonstration Series – A LOT MORE ROCK N ROLL

How did this one come about, well I am a huge fan of Linda Ronstadt (and I have many of her albums, collections, greatest hits etc, could listen to her all day. Linda is not a songwriter she vibrated those golden cords on songs written by others, some famous, some obscure from Motown to Country she sang them all. There is one rather obscure song which she recorded for Capitol, it appeared on her Hand Sown Home Grown album and is included on The Capitol Years Collection, titled We Need A Whole Lot More Of Jesus (And A Lot Less Rock n Roll) it was written by Wayne Raney in 1959.

As I look around the world and as a student of history generally I have to disagree with the premise of that song and thus my song A LOT MORE ROCK N ROLL provides an opposing view.

I do not present a case in the song against Jesus or his teachings and certainly not against faith in whatever one may believe or gets them through the day.  The song does not call in to question one’s religion or belief but the whole of what I describe as “corporate religion” the business of religion, the tyranny and power of religion and the effect it has on all walks of life.

History is littered with religious wars, oppression, religious discrimination, the missionary mindset in regards to indigenous peoples around the world, it has a lot to answer for. Considering where we are at as a race if we did a full cost benefit analysis of religion generally I suggest it would come up on the negative end of the scale. Religion has in the past, and does to this day, spawn hatred and division among people around the world. It has its grip on government in far too many places and has become a tool to get rich off the efforts of others far too often.

It is not about one particular religion or another, the song is all encompassing from the major corporate religions, to the send me more money TV Evangelists, from the small cults who espouse self degradation to the warring factions that demand blood … they are all rolled up in to one.

Do we need religion as a race probably, for some it brings great comfort but it also brings pain and misery to others and has for eons. I would say however as the song suggests “We need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll”.

If this were the Salem, Massachusetts in the 1700’s I would be labeled a witch and burned at the stake for denying religion’s right to run my life and if I remember correctly, according to the stories, Jesus was crucified for disputing the religion of the day.

Religion, like most things in life, should be absorbed in moderation too much of a good thing will eventually turn rotten and if the greedy get wind of it you can be sure they will be there to take advantage of those who allow religion to control how they live their lives.

Be good, be kind, do unto others …, don’t steal, lie, cheat or kill, don’t take advantage of others because you can, don’t seek to instill fear or unease for a few pieces of silver … the code for living in a civilized society is not hard

Keep your faith but let’s keep the damnation of religious fanaticism and power down to a minimum and listen to a lot more rock n roll (or whatever music you fancy).

A LOT MORE ROCK N ROLL – Lyrics

This ol’ world is coming unglued hard to see a light protrude the race is divided and its in plain view

Is that beam a light at the end of a dream or a freight train a comin’ with a full head of steam

We seek answers and get nothing but have faith send us more dollars and we’ll fill this place

Is there something to make us whole I think we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

Yeah we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

A lot less of Islam and Jehovah Witness too do without Hindu and the Christians can go too

This whole religion thing just divides us in to cults its a starter of wars the crusades and such

These ancient scriptures just ain’t up to date and now they are used to lead men to hate

More Neil more Joni and the Grateful Dead more Credence more Zeppelin and more Jethro Tull

Yeah we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

Listen up now it may set you free and it sure as life won’t demand that you see

Hear the music get in your head lose those worn scrolls don’t lay in that bed

There ain’t no savior coming to free the faithful no virgins in heaven no fire in hell

All this hate over misplaced faith we gotta get outta this place

The man on the pulpit collecting his daily bread don’t believe for a second that it’ll save the dead

We need a new place to stroll I think we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

Yeah we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

False prophets stand before us preach good and evil while they hoard enough gold to feed all the people

Don’t need no religion to save your soul just play that old rock n roll

More Jackson more Jimi and the Jefferson Airplane too seek the light in the songs they do

Don’t ask for nothing don’t pay no toll just a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

Yeah we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll

Yeah we need a whole lot less religion and a lot more Rock n Roll
