MOTHER LISTEN NOW

MOTHER LISTEN NOW – Demo

I wrote the lyrics to this song in 1983 prior to having enough understanding of music theory to actually put it to music, I’ve learned a thing or two since and they have now been put to music.

I can’t remember which war the USA was between at the time, there have been so many in my life they are hard to keep track of. It suffices to say the US was warming up to send young men off to another war for profit somewhere in the world.

It came to me that if the mother’s of all those sons just put their collective feet down and said, no more are we going to have our children sacrificed in your wars for profit, that would be a powerful force to reckon with. Could those old men in their suits and fancy uniforms look the mothers of the young men, they propose to use as fodder, in the eye and tell them … the loss of your child is for the greater good of our bank account. Would it be harder to justify the call to arms if they had to ask permission of the mother’s to send their sons off to die or be injured and damaged for life. It is proper to ask permission of the family of a young woman when a young man proposes marriage but not when the Military Industrial Complex wants to send a young man off to die on foreign soil.

I tried something different for me in the playing of this song, something which a lot of guitar players do, using a pick to pick the bottom strings and fingers to pick the high strings. I like the sound but the process takes a bit of getting used to.

As Jackson Browne once said “some songs are meant to be sung at the darkest of times“… this is one of those songs. As power mad politicians and their owners in the Military Industrial Complex are conjuring up the next “enemy” and beating the drums of war perhaps it is the mother’s who need to stand up and say … not with my son you won’t, send yours if you must.

MOTHER LISTEN NOW – Lyrics

Young boys die in the far away sand Mothers sit alone just don’t understand

Young boys die for an old man’s stand Mother can’t you see it’s just part of the plan

Mothers listen now please don’t wait till they see the shine of those pearly gates

Till they’ve left their love in that foreign state only you can stop this terrible fate

Why they want to kill young men the story brings my mind to bend

It’s happened before and now it’s happening again

They won’t stop till they get what they want they want to win damn the cost of young men

Oh Mother’s listen now and please don’t wait stand up and tell them oh its not to late

Mother Mother will it be your son that dies or some other mother too soon to cry

You wonder why you see it time and again charge yelled from the rear by tired old men

Mothers listen now please don’t wait till they see the shine of those pearly gates

Till they’ve left their love in that foreign state only you can stop this terrible fate
