THE SANDS OF TIME

The next installment of my LOCKDOWN LYRICS is THE SANDS OF TIME

I wrote this song in 2015 and the observation that set the original lyrics in motion was seeing on the news one of those warring tribes in the Middle East, Al Kidda, ISSIS, the Tally Ban one or another of them were blowing up old mosques, churches and monuments … because their God told them to do so.

Oh the outpouring of disgust and dismay from the good people of the West seeing this was astounding. The loudest outcries were from the way Left, the permanently offended and the Evangelical Right with condemnation post after post on social media … how dare they stoop to such a level to destroy history in the name of “Allah” or whomever.

Now I played it with the original lyrics (not recorded to date … one of these days) for a couple years but over those years a strange phenomena took place in the West. Over a few years it seemed the permanently offended and the pretending to be awake decided that in fact it is actually a good plan to alter history by destroying and changing things … and shazamm we had the Cancel Culture.

To take the new found pastime of addressing perceived hurt feeling by destroying or changing symbols and names in to account in the song I did something I don’t think I have ever previously done, I added new lyrics. I mean I didn’t want to leave what has become an important component of our culture, just as it is back there in the Middle East (or is that Middle Ages), out of a song about that highly intelligent past time of changing history by destroying monuments and statues and changing names and dates.

To not include what has become the cancel history by the removal of visual effects mindset, would be remiss of a folk rock songwriter, if you are not going to tell it like it is why bother telling it at all. You can’t take sides, blowing up a monument because Allah said you should or tearing down a statue because you don’t like what you perceive it to represent well it’s all pretty much the same to an independent observer.

It would be better if we demanded that the full and sometimes ugly history be written in the history text books and taught in schools without bias … history should be understood and learned from because you can’t change it and you can’t fix people’s feeling by blacking it out.

THE SANDS OF TIME – LYRICS – by BOB CRAIN

You can’t destroy history though you think you must

You can destroy monuments and turn them in to dust

But history lives on that you can trust

The structures of time are best left untouched

In time they will wither erosion and rust

You are not the sands of time it’s your thinking that’s a relic

Your God did not command that you destroy all that has past

In fact it is your God that has created it to last

By your God’s hand all art and sculptures have stood

He would have erased them by now if they weren’t for some good

You can topple statues and rename the streets

can’t change the facts of history by busting concrete

Change the date the name the symbolic flag

the story remains the same and you still feel bad

There is no value in destroying the past

It is there to learn from like a light on the path

You seek to destroy but you live in the past

Your God did not command that you destroy all that has past

In fact it is your God that has created it to last

By your God’s hand all art and sculptures have stood

He would have erased them by now if they weren’t for some good
