The next contribution to my LOCKDOWN LYRICS SERIES – HIGHWAYS

A relatively new song and not yet recorded HIGHWAYS was written on the road.

When driving from Melbourne to the country it dawned on me that the highways and byways of travel are much like the road of life. There are signs of things to come, barriers to keep one on the road and others passing by going here or coming from there.

Folk Rock songwriters see and write about life, people and the human condition … among other things and this is one of those songs. Once again observe and translate, interpretation is up to the listener.

This song also goes to show that not ALL of my songwriting is angst driven, finger pointing observations of the state of the world or some of the people in it … although admittedly the percentages of those type is pretty.

LYRICS – HIGHWAYS

Looking out I see the red lights of the future and white lights of the past coming on fast

Dark grey with broken dots and dashes of things that have come and gone

Passing clues of what’s ahead  signs of turning fortunes arrows point the way

Structures and guides so we don’t sway                on course we must stay

Keep to one side till you find yourself safe to be passing those who can’t handle the pace

No adverse conditions so go ahead and fly capture the space as life passes by

If your brain needs a rest or your body is shot just ahead there is a rest stop

You’ll be back on the road soon enough there’s some open road ahead and maybe some rough

Out on the highway of travel there are things to keep you in line barriers markers and road signs

Out on the highway of life things are much the same with resting places and slow lanes

You can exit the race between the lines you must steer you can’t just opt out and go down a gear

You’ll have time to see the lights of the future assess the way forward and make sure it’s clear

Sometimes the road is straight and narrow but then there are hills and curves that are harrow

Cross town traffic and shit on the road sometimes its difficult to transfer the load

Out on the highway of travel there are things to keep you in line barriers markers and road signs

Out on the highway of life things are much the same with resting places and slow lanes

Then there are times with no lines to contain when instinct and science meet in the brain

The road ahead could be icy and slick so slow down a bit no need to be quick

It’s a long road to ones final destination take a good look around behold the fascination

That side road ahead may lead to adventure take a chance or two in a different direction

Out on the highway of travel there are things to keep you in line barriers markers and road signs

Out on the highway of life things are much the same with resting places and slow lanes

Out on the highway of travel there are things to keep you in line barriers markers and road signs

Out on the highway of life things are much the same with resting places and slow lanes
